Before wastage, worked out by the same rules as the calculator. For your job the calculator adds 2% to cement and 5% to sand and crush, and rounds cement up to whole bags.

How it is worked out

From the size of the work to bags

Concrete is measured wet, as it is poured, but it is made from dry cement, sand and crush, which take up more room loose than they do once water binds them: about 1.54 cft of dry materials for every cft of concrete. That dry volume is split by the mix. 1:2:4 is seven parts, so a seventh of it is cement: 100 cft of concrete needs 154 ÷ 7 = 22 cft of cement, which at 1.25 cft to a 50 kg bag is 17.6 bags, with 44 cft of sand and 88 cft of crush.

A brick wall is part brick and part mortar. About 30% of a 9 in or thicker wall is mortar, and 23% of a 4.5 in wall, which has no joints running through it. The wet mortar times 1.3 is the dry cement and sand that make it, split by the ratio: in 1:6 mortar a seventh is cement. So 100 sq ft of 9 in wall, 75 cft of it, takes 3.34 bags of cement in 1:6 and 4.68 bags in 1:4.

Plaster is the area times the thickness: 100 sq ft at 1/2 in is 4.17 cft of wet plaster. Times 1.3 and split by the mix, that is 0.87 of a bag of cement and 4.33 cft of sand in 1:4.

Last comes what to buy. The calculator adds 2% to the cement and rounds up to whole bags, because cement is sold by the bag, and adds 5% to sand and crush, given in cft and in tractor trolleys of 100 cft. The material calculator works to the same rules, so for the same work the two give the same number of bags.

Terms you will hear

OPC
Ordinary Portland cement, the grey cement sold in 50 kg bags for concrete, brickwork and plaster. Sulphate resisting cement (SRC), used below ground where the soil is salty, is counted the same way.
Mix ratio
The parts of each material by volume. Concrete of 1:2:4 is one part cement to two of sand and four of crush; mortar or plaster of 1:4 is one part cement to four of sand. The bigger the numbers after the 1, the leaner and weaker the mix.
Dry volume
The loose cement, sand and crush that make a volume of concrete or mortar. It comes to more than the finished work, because the finer materials settle into the gaps in the coarser ones: about 1.54 times for concrete and 1.3 times for mortar and plaster.
Coarse and fine sand
Coarse sand, such as Chenab or Lawrencepur sand, goes into concrete. Finer sand, such as Ravi sand in Lahore, goes into mortar and plaster.
Trolley
A tractor trolley of sand or crush, taken as 100 cft. Loads differ between suppliers and cities, so ask what yours carries and go by the cft when in doubt.

What is the cement price in Pakistan today?

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics' survey for August 2026 found a 50 kg bag at Rs 1,555 on average across the 35 cities it covers: Rs 1,590 in Lahore, Rs 1,465 in Karachi and Rs 1,532 in Islamabad. Prices ran from Rs 1,440 in Mingora to Rs 1,620 in Sargodha. Cement follows the cost of coal, power and diesel and the taxes on each bag, so its price moves every few weeks: ask your dealer for the day's rate and type it under Prices to cost your job.

How much is a bag of cement in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan or Peshawar?

In August 2026 the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics found a 50 kg bag at Rs 1,535 in Rawalpindi, Rs 1,580 in Faisalabad, Rs 1,590 in Multan, Rs 1,573 in Peshawar, Rs 1,530 in Quetta, Rs 1,519 in Hyderabad, Rs 1,580 in Gujranwala, Rs 1,550 in Sialkot and Rs 1,620 in Sargodha. The price table on this page lists all 35 cities it surveys, with their average at the foot.

How many bags of cement do I need for 100 sq ft?

It depends on the work. A 100 sq ft roof slab 6 in thick is 50 cft of concrete: in 1:2:4 it needs 8.8 bags, so 9 to buy with wastage. 100 sq ft of 9 in brick wall in 1:6 mortar needs 3.34 bags, and of 4.5 in wall in 1:4, 1.79. 100 sq ft of plaster needs 0.87 of a bag at 1/2 in thick in 1:4, and 1.3 bags at 3/4 in. The wall and plaster figures are before the 2% the calculator adds for wastage.

How many cubic feet of concrete does one bag of cement make?

About 5.7 cft of 1:2:4 concrete, so a cft takes 0.176 of a 50 kg bag. A bag makes about 4.5 cft of 1:1.5:3, 8.1 cft of 1:3:6 and 10.6 cft of lean 1:4:8. So 100 cft of 1:2:4 needs 17.6 bags before wastage, and 22.4 in 1:1.5:3.

How much cement do I need for 1,000 bricks?

Laid in a 9 in wall in 1:6 mortar, 1,000 bricks take 3.3 bags of cement and 25 cft of sand, or 4.6 bags in 1:4 mortar. In a 4.5 in wall in 1:4 they take 3.5 bags. With 2% for wastage, buy 4 bags for the first. To work out any number, choose Brick wall and measure by Bricks.

How much cement do I need for plaster?

About 0.87 of a bag for every 100 sq ft of 1/2 in plaster in 1:4, with 4.3 cft of sand, and 1.3 bags at 3/4 in. So 1,000 sq ft of 1/2 in plaster in 1:4 takes 8.67 bags, 9 to buy, and 45.5 cft of fine sand. A wall plastered on both sides counts twice.

How many bags of cement does a roof slab need?

Multiply its length by its width by its thickness in feet for the volume, then split it by the mix. A 45 x 25 ft slab 6 in thick is 562.5 cft, and in 1:2:4 it needs 99 bags, so 101 to buy, with 260 cft of coarse sand and 520 cft of crush. The beams under a slab take concrete too: work them out as pieces of their own.

How much does a bag of cement weigh, and how many cft is it?

A bag is 50 kg, so 20 bags make a ton. Loose, it fills about 1.25 cft, the figure the calculator uses to turn cft of cement into bags. Some charts take a bag as 0.0347 cubic metres, 1.23 cft, which gives about 2% more bags for the same work.

Why does the calculator add 2% to the cement?

For what is lost between the shop and the work: torn bags, spills at the mixer and cement left in the bottom of a bag. It then rounds up to whole bags, since that is how cement is sold. Sand and crush get 5%, because more of them is lost on the ground where they are tipped.
