How it is worked out
From what you hold to the zakat due
Zakat is a fortieth, 2.5%, of the wealth you hold on your zakat date, once a lunar year has passed since you first held the nisab ("a quarter of a tenth", in the letter of Abu Bakr, Sahih al-Bukhari 1454). It is due on the whole of that wealth, not only on the part above the nisab, and it goes to the people Quran 9:60 names, such as the poor, the needy and those in debt.
The nisab is 52.5 tola of silver (612.36 grams), the 200 dirhams of Sahih Muslim 979, or 7.5 tola of gold (87.48 grams), the 20 dinars of Sunan Abi Dawud 1573. At the jewellers' rates of 29 September 2026, Rs 6,558 a tola of silver and Rs 437,336 a tola of 24 karat gold, that is Rs 344,295 by silver and Rs 3,280,020 by gold. When you hold anything besides gold, the Hanafi rule adds everything together and measures it against the silver nisab, as that serves the poor better; when you hold gold and nothing else, the nisab is 7.5 tola of it by weight. Some scholars today use the gold nisab for cash as well, since silver has lost so much of its value, and the calculator lets you choose it.
Property carries zakat only as trade goods: a plot, house or shop bought with the intention of selling it is counted each year at what it would sell for (Sunan Abi Dawud 1562). Your own home, a plot kept for building it, and what you use yourself carry none (Sahih al-Bukhari 1463). Property held to earn rent carries none either; the rent does, once received, as part of your cash. In the Hanafi school the intention to sell must be there when you buy, so a plot bought with no firm plan, or one you inherited or were given, is not trade goods even if you later decide to sell, and its zakat falls on the money once it is sold. This is the view of fatwa institutions such as Darul Uloom Karachi and Jamia Uloom-ul-Islamia Banuri Town; some scholars count a plot held as an investment in any case, and the calculator lets you count it.
Debts you must pay now come off before the nisab test. For a long loan paid in installments, such as a home loan or a plot bought on installments, many scholars in Pakistan take off only the installments due over the coming year, not the whole balance. Money owed to you counts if you expect it back; zakat on it may wait until it is received, when the years it was owed are paid for together. Leave out a debt you do not expect to recover.
The zakat banks deduct on the first of Ramadan is separate. Under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980, banks take 2.5% from savings and profit-and-loss accounts holding at least the government's nisab, Rs 503,529 for the zakat year 1446-47 AH, notified on 17 February 2026. It looks at one account on one day, where your own zakat covers all you hold on your zakat date, so ask your scholar whether to count a bank's deduction against what this calculator shows. Zakat paid under the Ordinance is a deductible allowance on your income tax return (section 60, Income Tax Ordinance 2001).

+92 333 2466662Chat on WhatsAppIs zakat due on a plot?
It depends on why you bought it. A plot bought to sell is trade goods: 2.5% of what it would sell for today is due every year, Rs 250,000 (2.5 lakh) on a plot worth Rs 1 crore. A plot bought to build your own home on carries no zakat, and in the Hanafi school neither does one bought with no firm plan to sell, or one you inherited; zakat falls on the money once it is sold.
Is zakat due on property held for investment?
If you bought it to sell at a profit, yes: count its market value each year. If you bought it to rent out, the property carries no zakat and the rent you have saved is counted with your cash. If you bought it with no firm plan, to sell or keep as prices go, most fatwa institutions in Pakistan hold that no zakat is due on it, while some scholars count it; the calculator lets you follow either view.
How is zakat worked out on rental income?
The rented house, flat or shop carries no zakat. The rent you receive joins your cash, and whatever of it you still hold on your zakat date is counted with the rest of your wealth at 2.5%. There is no separate zakat when the rent comes in; a few contemporary scholars suggest one, but that is not the Hanafi position.
What is the nisab in 2026 in Pakistan?
At the jewellers' rates of 29 September 2026, Rs 344,295 by silver (52.5 tola at Rs 6,558) and Rs 3,280,020 by gold (7.5 tola at Rs 437,336). The government's nisab for the zakat banks deducted in Ramadan 1447 was Rs 503,529, notified on 17 February 2026. Gold and silver prices move daily, so put the day's rates into the calculator.
Is zakat due on my house or my car?
No. There is no zakat on the home you live in, a plot kept to build it, your car, furniture or other things you use yourself (Sahih al-Bukhari 1463). Zakat falls on wealth that is held or can grow: cash, gold and silver, trade goods and money owed to you.
Is zakat due on gold jewellery that is worn?
In the Hanafi school, yes: gold and silver jewellery counts whether it is worn or kept, at its value on your zakat date. The Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools do not charge zakat on jewellery kept for ordinary wear. Each woman counts her own jewellery with her own wealth.
Is the bank's zakat deduction on 1 Ramadan my full zakat?
No. Banks deduct 2.5% on 1 Ramadan from savings accounts holding at least the government's nisab (Rs 503,529 for 1446-47 AH), under the Zakat and Ushr Ordinance 1980. That covers one account on one day; your zakat covers all you hold on your zakat date. Ask your scholar whether to count what the bank took against the total here.
How is zakat worked out on a plot bought on installments?
If you bought it to sell, count what the plot or its file would sell for today, and take off the installments you owe as a debt: many scholars in Pakistan take off only those due over the coming year. If you are buying it to live on, it carries no zakat, and neither do the installments you pay.
