Before wastage, at 1.54 cft of dry materials to a cft of concrete, 1.25 cft to a 50 kg bag and water at half the cement's weight. For your job the calculator adds 2% to cement and 5% to sand and crush, and rounds cement up to whole bags.

How it is worked out

From volume to bags, sand and crush

Concrete is measured by its volume. For anything rectangular, a slab, a beam, a column or a footing, multiply the length by the width by the depth, all in feet: a 40 x 30 ft slab 6 in thick is 40 × 30 × 0.5 = 600 cft. A round column or pile is 3.1416 times its radius squared times its height, so a 12 in column 10 ft high is 7.85 cft. A cubic metre is 35.31 cft.

Why 1.54? Cement, sand and crush are measured loose and dry, and they fit into less room once water is added: the sand settles into the gaps between the stones, the cement into the gaps in the sand, and the water lets it all pack down. So it takes about 1.54 cft of dry materials to make 1 cft of concrete. The figure also allows for sand that bulks when it is damp. Estimates use anything from 1.52 to 1.57; this calculator uses 1.54, as the material calculator does.

The dry volume is then split by the mix. 1:2:4 is seven parts: one of cement, two of sand and four of crush. For 100 cft of concrete that is 154 cft dry: 22 cft of cement, which at 1.25 cft to a 50 kg bag is 17.6 bags, 44 cft of sand and 88 cft of crush. Water is taken at half the cement's weight, 440 litres. Last, 2% is added to the cement, rounded up to whole bags, and 5% to the sand and crush.

M15 and M20 are grades of concrete named for their strength. The M is for mix, and the number is the strength a test cube reaches after 28 days, in newtons a square mm: 15 and 20, about 2,200 and 2,900 psi. 1:2:4 is the nominal mix taken for M15 and 1:1.5:3 the one taken for M20. 1:3:6 and 1:4:8 are plain concrete, laid with no steel in it under floors and footings.

A nominal mix is a fixed recipe by volume, measured out on site as a bag of cement to so many boxes of sand and crush, and it serves for ordinary work up to M20. A design mix is worked out in a laboratory from the actual cement, sand, crush and water to reach a stated strength, is batched by weight and is checked with test cubes. Grades above M20, and most ready-mixed concrete, are design mixes: go by the mix design for those, not a ratio. The structural drawings say which a job needs.

Terms you will hear

PCC
Plain cement concrete, with no steel in it: lean 1:4:8 or 1:3:6, laid under footings and floors to give a clean, level base.
RCC
Reinforced cement concrete, cast round steel bars: slabs, beams, columns and footings, usually in 1:2:4 or 1:1.5:3.
Lenter
The word Pakistani sites use for an RCC roof slab, and for the day it is cast.
Curing
Keeping new concrete wet so it goes on gaining strength, by ponding water on a slab or covering it with wet sacking: usually for at least 7 days, and longer in hot weather.
Slump
A test of how wet a mix is. A cone of fresh concrete is lifted away and the drop measured; a big drop usually means too much water.
Shuttering
The steel or wooden forms and props that hold concrete in shape until it sets. It is not counted here.

What is the sand price in Pakistan today?

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics' survey for August 2026 found a truck of 100 cft of pit sand at Rs 7,406 on average across the 34 cities with a sand price, about Rs 74 a cft: Rs 7,998 in Lahore, Rs 8,233 in Karachi and Rs 13,631 in Islamabad. Prices ran from Rs 2,932 in Hyderabad to Rs 15,165 in Abbottabad. Sand is cheap where it is dug and dear where it is carted far, and coarse sand for concrete, such as Chenab or Lawrencepur sand, costs more than the pit sand the survey prices.

What is the crush (bajri) rate per truck?

In August 2026 a truck of 100 cft of crush cost Rs 10,973 on average across the 35 cities the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics surveyed, about Rs 110 a cft: Rs 18,773 in Lahore, Rs 9,253 in Karachi and Rs 16,522 in Islamabad. Prices ran from Rs 4,466 in Khuzdar to Rs 18,996 in Sahiwal. Crush is quarried stone, so the haul from the quarry is much of its price, and it costs more on the plains of Punjab than in cities near the hills.

How do I calculate the volume of concrete in cft?

Multiply the length by the width by the depth, all in feet, and by the number of pieces; a depth in inches is divided by 12 first. A 40 x 30 ft slab 6 in thick is 600 cft, and ten footings of 4 x 4 ft, 18 in deep, are 240 cft. A round column 12 in across and 10 ft high is 7.85 cft. Divide cft by 35.31 for cubic metres.

How much cement, sand and crush do I need for 1:2:4 concrete?

For every 100 cft, 17.6 bags of cement, 44 cft of coarse sand and 88 cft of crush, before wastage. With 2% on the cement and 5% on the rest, buy 18 bags, 46.2 cft of sand and 92.4 cft of crush. A 600 cft slab takes 108 bags, 277.2 cft of sand and 554.4 cft of crush, about 2.8 and 5.5 trolleys.

How much cement, sand and crush are in 1 cubic metre of concrete?

In 1:2:4, 6.2 bags of cement (311 kg), 0.44 cubic metres of sand (15.5 cft) and 0.88 cubic metres of crush (31.1 cft). In 1:1.5:3, 7.9 bags (396 kg), with 0.42 cubic metres of sand and 0.84 cubic metres of crush. In 1:3:6, 4.4 bags. These are before wastage.

Why is the dry volume of concrete 1.54 times the wet volume?

Because the dry materials pack into less room once water is added: the sand fills the gaps between the stones, and the cement the gaps in the sand. It takes about 1.54 cft of loose cement, sand and crush to make 1 cft of concrete, which also allows for sand that bulks when damp. Some estimates use 1.52 or 1.57, which changes the answer by a bag or two in a hundred.

What is the difference between M15 and M20 concrete, and which should I use?

The number is the strength a test cube reaches after 28 days: 15 and 20 newtons a square mm, about 2,200 and 2,900 psi. M15 is made as 1:2:4 and M20 as 1:1.5:3, which takes about 27% more cement. Most house slabs, beams and columns are 1:2:4, with 1:1.5:3 where the engineer asks for it, and lean 1:4:8 or 1:3:6 goes under footings and floors. Always follow the structural drawings.

How much water does concrete need?

About half the cement's weight, so 25 litres to a 50 kg bag: 440 litres for 100 cft of 1:2:4. More water makes concrete easier to place but weaker and more prone to cracks, so add only what the mix needs to be worked into place, and keep it wet afterwards while it cures.

Does the calculator include steel and shuttering?

No. It works out the concrete and what goes into it. Weigh the bars on the steel weight calculator, and for a roof slab the roof slab calculator adds the steel and the shuttering area too.
