Calculator

Count your bricks

Give the wall's length and height, or its area, and the doors and windows in it, then pick the thickness. The answer is in whole bricks, with the cement in 50 kg bags and the sand for the mortar.

The wall
Measure by
Add up walls of one thickness and height into one length.
Measured along the middle of the wall.
Feet and inches work: 10'-6".
Left out of the wall. A 3 x 7 ft door is 21 sq ft, a 4 x 4 ft window 16.
Wall thickness
A 9 in wall is full brick thick.
Mortar, cement to sand
Usually 1:4 for a 4.5 in wall and 1:6 for 9 in and thicker, which is where the calculator starts.
Lintels and columns in the wall
Concrete lintels, columns and beams take the place of bricks. A lintel 9 in wide, 6 in deep and 5 ft long is 1.88 cft.

For bricks of 9 x 4.5 x 3 in, at 13.5 to a cft of wall. Cement and sand are before wastage; for your wall the calculator adds 2% to cement and 5% to sand, and rounds cement up to whole bags.

How it is worked out

From wall size to bricks and bags

A brick wall is counted by its volume. Its face is the length times the height, less the doors and windows, and its volume is the face times the thickness: a 9 in wall is 0.75 ft thick, so 100 sq ft of it is 75 cft. Concrete lintels, columns and beams inside the wall take the place of bricks, so their volume comes off too.

Bricks in Pakistan are 9 x 4.5 x 3 in, and with the mortar joints a cft of wall takes 13.5 of them. So a sq ft of 9 in wall takes 10.13 bricks, of 4.5 in wall 5.06 and of 13.5 in wall 15.19: 1,013, 506 and 1,519 to 100 sq ft.

The mortar is about 30% of a 9 in or thicker wall, and 23% of a 4.5 in wall, which has no joints running through it. The wet mortar times 1.3 is the dry cement and sand it takes, split by the ratio: in 1:6 a seventh is cement. 100 sq ft of 9 in wall holds 22.5 cft of mortar, which takes 3.34 bags of cement and 25.1 cft of sand.

For what to buy, the calculator adds 5% to the bricks for breakage and rounds up to whole bricks, adds 2% to the cement and rounds up to whole bags, and adds 5% to the sand. The cement calculator and the material calculator work to the same rules, so all three agree for the same wall.

Terms you will hear

First class brick
A well-burnt brick of even size and colour with sharp edges, which rings when two are struck together. Second and third class bricks are less even, weaker and cheaper.
Stretcher and header
A brick laid along the wall shows its long face, a stretcher; one laid across it shows its end, a header. A 9 in wall uses both, so its mortar has joints running through it.
Half brick wall
A 4.5 in wall of bricks laid lengthways, all stretchers. It carries little load and is used for partitions.
Centre line
The line along the middle of a wall. Measuring walls along it counts each corner once; measuring the outside faces counts the corners twice.
DPC
Damp proof course: a thin layer of rich concrete, often with a coat of bitumen, laid on the plinth to stop damp rising into the brickwork above.

How much are 1,000 bricks in Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan or Peshawar?

In August 2026 the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics found 1,000 first class bricks at Rs 26,694 in Rawalpindi, Rs 21,000 in Faisalabad, Rs 16,533 in Multan, Rs 20,105 in Peshawar, Rs 15,242 in Quetta, Rs 15,659 in Hyderabad, Rs 27,329 in Gujranwala, Rs 24,000 in Sialkot and Rs 18,327 in Sargodha. The price table on this page lists all 32 cities with a brick price, with the price of one brick beside each.

How many bricks are in 100 sq ft of wall?

1,013 in a 9 in wall, 506 in a 4.5 in wall and 1,519 in a 13.5 in wall, at 13.5 bricks to a cft. With 5% for breakage, buy 1,064, 532 and 1,595. Take the doors and windows off the wall's area first.

How many bricks are in a cubic foot?

13.5, for bricks of 9 x 4.5 x 3 in laid in mortar, so 1,350 to 100 cft and about 477 to a cubic metre. That holds for a wall of any thickness; what the thickness changes is how many cft a sq ft of wall holds.

How many bricks does a sq ft of 9 inch wall take?

10.13, so about 10: a sq ft of 9 in wall is 0.75 cft, and a cft takes 13.5 bricks. A sq ft of 4.5 in wall takes 5.06 and of 13.5 in wall 15.19. Add 5% for breakage when you buy.

How much cement and sand do 1,000 bricks need?

In a 9 in wall in 1:6 mortar, 3.3 bags of cement and 24.8 cft of sand; in 1:4 mortar, 4.6 bags and 23.1 cft. In a 4.5 in wall in 1:4, 3.5 bags and 17.7 cft, since a half-brick wall holds less mortar. These are before wastage.

How many bricks do I need for a room?

Measure the walls along their middle, so the corners are not counted twice. A 12 x 12 ft room with 9 in walls has 51 ft of wall on its centre line; 10 ft high, that is 510 sq ft, or 473 sq ft after a 3 x 7 ft door and a 4 x 4 ft window. It takes 4,789 bricks, 5,029 to buy, with 17 bags of cement and 125 cft of sand in 1:6 mortar.

How do I work out the cost of a brick wall?

Price the bricks, cement and sand it takes. At Lahore prices from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics for August 2026 (first class bricks Rs 23,355 a 1,000, cement Rs 1,590 a bag, pit sand Rs 7,998 a trolley), 1,000 sq ft of 9 in wall in 1:6 takes 10,632 bricks, 35 bags and 263.3 cft of sand, which comes to Rs 325,015 (3.25 lakh). That is Rs 325 a sq ft, or Rs 433 a cft of brickwork, before labour. Type your own prices under Prices for your wall.

Why add 5% to the bricks?

For bricks that break in carting, stacking and handling, those cut into halves and bats at corners and openings, and the odd one too poorly burnt to use. The total is then rounded up to whole bricks. Cement gets 2% and sand 5%.
