Weights are for the bar's nominal size at 7,850 kg a cubic metre. A mill's own chart may differ slightly within the rolling tolerance.
How it is worked out
From bar size to kg
Steel weighs 7,850 kg a cubic metre, so a round bar weighs its diameter in mm, squared, divided by 162.2, in kg a metre. A 12 mm bar weighs 144 ÷ 162.2 = 0.888 kg a metre, and dividing by 3.28 gives kg a foot.
On Pakistani sites a bar is named by sutar, eighths of an inch: 4 sutar is 1/2 in and 8 sutar is 1 in. Some mills roll a bar to its inch size, which makes a 1/2 in bar 12.7 mm across, and some to the nearest metric size, 12 mm. The inch bar weighs about 12% more for the same length, so a chart for one does not fit the other. Go by the size printed on your supplier's bill.
Steel is sold by weight, by the ton or by the kg, and a bar from the mill is about 40 ft long. Where two bars overlap at a lap, and where a bar is bent into a hook, the job takes more steel than the straight lengths on the drawing, which is what the allowance is for.
On site
Terms you will hear
- Sutar
- An eighth of an inch, the name steel bars go by on site: 3 sutar is 3/8 in, 4 sutar 1/2 in, 5 sutar 5/8 in. Also written sooter or suter.
- Grade 40 and Grade 60
- The strength of the steel, in thousands of pounds per square inch. It changes how strong a bar is, not what it weighs: a Grade 60 bar weighs the same as a Grade 40 bar of the same size.
- Lap
- Where one bar overlaps the next to carry the load across, usually 40 to 50 times the bar's diameter. Laps are the main reason a job takes more steel than its straight lengths.
- Bar bending schedule
- The list of every bar in a structure with its size, shape, length and count, from which the steel is cut and ordered. Weigh its totals here.

In the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics' survey for August 2026, 1/2 in Grade 40 steel bars averaged Rs 241,644 a tonne, about Rs 242 a kg, across 35 cities: Rs 237,380 in Lahore, Rs 241,360 in Karachi and Rs 247,167 in Islamabad. They were cheapest in Gujranwala, Sialkot and Dera Ismail Khan, at Rs 235,000, and dearest in Sargodha, at Rs 260,000. The larger mills' branded bars were quoted at Rs 258 to Rs 260 a kg for Grade 40 and Rs 262 to Rs 265 for Grade 60 in late September 2026. The steel rate follows the cost of imported scrap, the rupee, electricity and transport, so it can change from week to week: ask your supplier for the day's rate and type it into the calculator.
What is the sariya rate per kg?
About Rs 242 a kg for 1/2 in Grade 40 bars, the average of the 35 cities surveyed in August 2026 (Rs 241,644 a tonne ÷ 1,000), from Rs 235 in Gujranwala, Sialkot and Dera Ismail Khan to Rs 260 in Sargodha. Grade 60 bars from the larger mills were quoted at Rs 262 to Rs 265 a kg in late September 2026. Steel is sold by weight, so a 40 ft bar of 4 sutar (1/2 in), about 12.1 kg, costs about Rs 2,930 at Rs 242 a kg, and Rs 3,180 to Rs 3,210 at the Grade 60 rates.
How much does a 4 sutar (1/2 in) steel bar weigh?
0.303 kg a foot when it is rolled to the inch size (12.7 mm), so a 40 ft bar weighs about 12.1 kg. A 12 mm metric bar weighs 0.271 kg a foot, about 10.8 kg for 40 ft.
How many steel bars are there in a ton?
For 40 ft bars rolled to inch sizes, about 147 bars of 3 sutar, 82 of 4 sutar, 53 of 5 sutar, 37 of 6 sutar and 21 of 8 sutar. Shorter bars mean more of them in a ton; the calculator works it out for any length.
What is the formula for the weight of a steel bar?
Weight in kg a metre = d × d ÷ 162.2, with d the diameter in mm. Many charts round the 162.2 to 162, which makes no difference on site. For kg a foot, divide the weight a metre by 3.28.
Why do steel weight charts give different weights for the same bar?
Some charts are for bars rolled to inch sizes and others for metric bars sold under the same name. A 1/2 in bar is 12.7 mm across and a 12 mm bar is not, and the difference is about 12% in weight. Choose the sizes that match your supplier's bill.
Does the grade of steel change its weight?
No. Grade 40 and Grade 60 steel weigh the same for the same bar size and length. The grade says how much load the bar carries, which is for the structural engineer to choose.
How much steel does a house need?
That is set by the structural drawings, so count the bars on them, or on the bar bending schedule, and weigh them here. For an early budget before the drawings exist, the house construction cost calculator gives the whole cost of a house per sq ft.
