The sides are DHA Lahore's standard plot sizes from its 2026 regulations, except 3 marla, which they do not list and whose sides vary most from one scheme to the next. A plot is sold by its nominal size, so its sides can come to a little more or less: 35 × 65 ft is 2,275 sq ft, not 2,250 sq ft.
How it is worked out
Why a marla is not one size
A marla is not one fixed size. The revenue measure, the one the patwari keeps in the land record, counts 272.25 sq ft: 9 sarsai, each a square karam of 5.5 by 5.5 ft. Most housing schemes count 225 sq ft, exactly 25 sq yd, which is also the marla of DHA in Lahore and Islamabad and of the building rules for Lahore district. Some dealers quote a marla of 250 sq ft, though no regulation sets it.
A plot is named in whichever marla its scheme or land record uses, and the same ground counts differently in each: a 10 marla plot in a scheme, 2,250 sq ft, is only 8.26 marla in the revenue measure. A kanal is always 20 marla of the same size, so it moves with the marla: 4,500 sq ft where a marla is 225 sq ft, 5,000 sq ft at 250 and 5,445 sq ft in the revenue measure.
Square feet, square yards, square metres, acres and hectares never change, so they are the safe way to compare two plots. An acre is always 43,560 sq ft, or 4,840 sq yd: exactly 8 kanal in the revenue measure, and 9.68 kanal at 225 sq ft a marla. A hectare is 10,000 sq m, about 2.47 acres.
The converter turns what you give it into square feet, then divides by the size of each unit. Before you compare prices per marla, find out which marla each plot is measured in. For a plot in a scheme, the allotment letter or transfer papers give the size used; for land outside a scheme, the fard from the land record gives the area in kanal and marla, and the patwari can confirm which marla it counts.
Land units
The traditional units
The measures still used in land records and on the street, with their size where it is fixed.
- Sarsai
- A ninth of a marla in the revenue measure: one square karam, 5.5 by 5.5 ft, which is 30.25 sq ft. Land records give an area in kanal, marla and sarsai. Dealers sometimes call a ninth of a 225 sq ft marla, 25 sq ft, a sarsai, but that is not the revenue unit.
- Karam
- The patwari's unit of length, 5.5 ft (66 inches) in the revenue measure; some older local karams were a little shorter. A square karam is a sarsai, and 1,440 square karam make an acre.
- Marla
- The everyday unit for plots: 225 sq ft (25 sq yd) in most housing schemes and 272.25 sq ft (9 sarsai) in the revenue measure. Some dealers quote 250 sq ft, which no regulation sets. Check which one your papers use.
- Kanal
- 20 marla of whichever size is in use: 4,500 sq ft (500 sq yd) in most schemes, 5,000 sq ft at 250 sq ft a marla, and 5,445 sq ft (605 sq yd) in the revenue measure.
- Acre
- 43,560 sq ft, 4,840 sq yd or about 4,047 sq m, whatever the marla: 8 kanal in the revenue measure, 9.68 kanal at 225 sq ft a marla.
- Killa
- An acre of farmland, as it is called in Punjab, also known as a ghumaon: 8 kanal in the revenue measure, laid out as 36 by 40 karam. A murabba holds 25 killa.
- Murabba
- 25 acres (25 killa), which is 200 kanal in the revenue measure: the square blocks farmland in Punjab's canal colonies was laid out in. The word means a square.
- Gaz and square yard
- A gaz is a yard, 3 ft, and a plot given in gaz, such as a 120 gaz plot in Karachi, means square yards of 9 sq ft each: 25 sq yd make a 225 sq ft marla and 500 sq yd a kanal of 4,500 sq ft. Islamabad's sector plots are laid out in feet and quoted in square yards: 35 × 70 ft is 272.22 sq yd, which has nothing to do with the 272.25 sq ft marla.
- Bigha
- Commonly 4 kanal in Punjab, half an acre (21,780 sq ft in the revenue measure), but it differs from one region to the next and sometimes within a district, so it is left out of the converter. Go by the figure in the land record.

225 sq ft in most housing schemes, and 272.25 sq ft in the revenue measure that land records use. Some dealers quote 250 sq ft, though no regulation sets it. The revenue marla is 21% bigger than a 225 sq ft marla, so check which one a plot's papers use before comparing prices.
How many square feet are in 1 kanal?
A kanal is 20 marla, so it is 4,500 sq ft where a marla is 225 sq ft, as in most housing schemes, which is why a kanal plot is usually 50 × 90 ft. It is 5,000 sq ft at 250 sq ft a marla and 5,445 sq ft in the revenue measure.
What is the size of a 5 marla plot?
1,125 sq ft, or 125 sq yd, where a marla is 225 sq ft, usually laid out as 25 × 45 ft. In the revenue measure 5 marla is 1,361.25 sq ft, and at 250 sq ft a marla it is 1,250 sq ft.
How many square feet is 10 marla?
2,250 sq ft, or 250 sq yd, at 225 sq ft a marla. A 10 marla plot is usually 35 × 65 ft, which is 2,275 sq ft: plots are sold by their nominal size and the sides are rounded to whole feet. In the revenue measure 10 marla is 2,722.5 sq ft.
How many kanal are in an acre?
Exactly 8 in the revenue measure, where a marla is 272.25 sq ft and a kanal 5,445 sq ft. Where a marla is 225 sq ft, a kanal is 4,500 sq ft and an acre of 43,560 sq ft is 9.68 kanal. DHA Lahore's construction regulations (the 2026 edition) define a marla as 25 sq yd, which is 225 sq ft, and a kanal as 500 sq yd or 4,500 sq ft. DHA Islamabad-Rawalpindi also counts 225 sq ft to the marla, while DHA Karachi sizes its plots in square yards. DHA Lahore's standard plots are 25 × 45 ft for 5 marla, 35 × 64 or 35 × 65 ft for 10 marla, and 50 × 90 ft for 1 kanal.
How do I convert square yards to marla?
Divide by 25 where a marla is 225 sq ft: a square yard is 9 sq ft, and 25 of them make 225. So a 120 sq yd plot is 4.8 marla, 240 sq yd is 9.6 marla, and 500 sq yd is 20 marla, one kanal. In the revenue measure a marla is 30.25 sq yd, so divide by that instead.
