The tiles in a box are the counts the calculator starts from. Packing differs from maker to maker: 12 x 12 in tiles also come 18 to a box (17.4 sq ft), and 16 x 16 in tiles 8 to a box (13.8 sq ft), so go by the label on yours. The cutting allowance is what the calculator adds for a tile of that size, before 2% for breakage.

How it is worked out

From room size to boxes

A floor is never covered by whole tiles. Along every wall and round each door frame, pipe and corner, tiles are cut to fit, and the offcut is seldom any use elsewhere. So the calculator adds to the area: 5% for tiles up to 12 in long, 7% up to 24 in and 10% for anything bigger, since one wasted strip of a 24 x 48 in slab is a lot of tile. It then adds 2% for tiles that crack in handling and cutting, and rounds up to whole boxes, because shops sell tiles by the box. A few tiles left over are worth keeping: tiles from a later batch can differ in shade and in size, so spares from the same batch are the only sure way to replace a cracked tile years later.

Tiles are sold by inch names but made to metric sizes. A "24 x 24" is 60 x 60 cm, which is 23.6 in a side, so it covers 3.875 sq ft rather than 4, and a box of 4 covers 15.5 sq ft (1.44 square metres). Counting by the inch name overstates every tile by about 3%, which on a 1,200 sq ft floor leaves you 3 boxes short. This calculator works from the cm size: a "12 x 12" is 30 x 30 cm, 0.97 sq ft, and a "12 x 18" wall tile is 30 x 45 cm, 1.45 sq ft.

On a new floor, tiles are usually laid on a bed of cement and sand mortar, here 1 in thick at 1:4, with a slurry of neat cement spread on it as each tile goes down. The bed takes up the unevenness of the slab under it and gives the fall to a drain. Tile adhesive is a thin bed of a few mm, combed on with a notched trowel, so it needs a surface that is already flat: a screed, plaster, or an old floor being tiled over. A 20 kg bag lays about 45 sq ft of floor or fixes about 60 sq ft of wall, where the bed is thinner. Walls are counted on adhesive.

Skirting is the strip of tile along the foot of the walls. It is usually cut from the floor tiles, so it is added to the floor before the allowance: its length is the room's walls less the doorways, and it is about 4 in high. Grout, which fills the joints once the tiles have set, is counted at about 1 kg for every 50 sq ft; small tiles and wide joints take more.

Terms you will hear

Cutting allowance
The extra tile bought for the pieces cut to fit at walls, door frames and corners. It grows with the tile, since an offcut of a big tile wastes more.
Batch and shade
Tiles are made in batches, and one batch can differ a little from the next in colour and in size. The batch or shade code is usually printed on the box: buy the whole job from one.
Skirting
A strip of tile, usually about 4 in high, along the foot of a wall where it meets the floor. It protects the wall from mops and knocks and is usually cut from the floor tiles.
Slurry
Neat cement mixed with water to a thick cream and spread on a fresh mortar bed, so each tile grips the bed under it.
Grout
The fine filler pressed into the joints between tiles once they have set. It is sold by the kg, in colours to match the tiles.

What is the tiles price in Pakistan per sq ft?

In September 2026, most tiles cost Rs 80 to Rs 800 a sq ft, for the tiles alone. Typical prices are about Rs 115 a sq ft for 12 x 12 in floor tiles, Rs 160 for 16 x 16 in, Rs 290 for 24 x 24 in and Rs 590 for 24 x 48 in slabs, and about Rs 140 for ceramic wall tiles; imported tiles cost Rs 250 to Rs 1,400. The Punjab government's rate for its own works, July to December 2026, is Rs 224 a sq ft for 24 x 24 in porcelain and Rs 140 for ceramic wall and floor tiles. The price moves with the body (ceramic, or half-body or full-body porcelain), the finish and the maker's grade, and big tiles and imports cost more a sq ft.

How much is a box of 24 x 24 tiles?

A box of 24 x 24 in tiles usually holds 4, which cover 15.5 sq ft (1.44 square metres). At Rs 130 to Rs 550 a sq ft, a box costs about Rs 2,000 to Rs 8,550 in September 2026, and about Rs 4,450 at the typical Rs 290 a sq ft. Some ranges pack 6 to a box, 23.3 sq ft, so compare boxes by the sq ft they hold, and type the price you are quoted into the calculator for the cost of your floor.

What is the labour rate for tile fixing per sq ft?

Rate cards for September 2026 put labour alone at Rs 30 to Rs 90 a sq ft for floor tiles up to 24 x 24 in and Rs 35 to Rs 60 for wall tiles, and Rs 130 to Rs 190 for 24 x 48 in slabs and wood-look planks, which take more care to lay flat. Rates vary widely by city and by fixer, so get more than one quote. The cement and sand or the adhesive, and the grout, are extra: the calculator works out how much of each to buy.

How many tiles do I need for my room?

Multiply the room's length by its width for the floor area in sq ft, add the cutting allowance and 2% for breakage, and divide by the sq ft in one box, rounding up. A 12 x 16 ft room is 192 sq ft: in 24 x 24 in tiles it takes 14 boxes (56 tiles), or 15 boxes (60 tiles) with 4 in skirting round the walls.

How many 24 x 24 tiles are in a box?

Usually 4, which cover 15.5 sq ft (1.44 square metres): a 24 x 24 tile is really 60 x 60 cm, 3.875 sq ft, not 4. A few ranges come 6 to a box, 23.25 sq ft, so check the label and change the count under Tiles in a box if yours differs.

How many sq ft is a box of tiles?

It depends on the size and the maker, and the label on the box says, usually in square metres: multiply by 10.76 for sq ft. The calculator starts from these boxes. Floor tiles: 12 x 12 in, 11 tiles, 10.7 sq ft; 16 x 16 in, 6 tiles, 10.3 sq ft; 24 x 24 in, 4 tiles, 15.5 sq ft; 12 x 24 in, 8 tiles, 15.5 sq ft; 24 x 48 in, 2 tiles, 15.5 sq ft. Wall tiles: 8 x 12 in, 25 tiles, 16.1 sq ft; 10 x 16 in, 15 tiles, 16.1 sq ft; 12 x 18 in, 10 tiles, 14.5 sq ft. Packing differs from maker to maker, though: 12 x 12 in tiles also come 18 to a box (17.4 sq ft), and 16 x 16 in tiles 8 to a box (13.8 sq ft). Set the count under Tiles in a box to match yours.

How many tiles do I need for a bathroom?

Work out the walls and the floor separately. A 6 x 8 ft bathroom tiled 8 ft high has 224 sq ft of wall, 206.5 sq ft after a 2.5 x 7 ft door. In 12 x 18 in tiles that is 156 tiles with the allowance, fixed with 4 bags of adhesive. Its 48 sq ft floor takes 54 tiles of 12 x 12 in. Choose Walls in the calculator for the first and A floor for the second, and it rounds each up to whole boxes of the count on your box.

How much extra tile should I buy for wastage?

5% for tiles up to 12 in long, 7% up to 24 in and 10% for bigger tiles, plus 2% for breakage, then round up to whole boxes. Allow more for tiles laid on the diagonal or a room with many corners. Buy it all at once from one batch and keep the spares, since a later batch may not match.

How do I work out tiles from sq ft?

Add the allowance to the sq ft you are tiling, divide by the sq ft in one box and round up. 500 sq ft of 24 x 24 in tiles with 7% for cutting and 2% for breakage is 545.7 sq ft, and 545.7 ÷ 15.5 is 35.2, so 36 boxes.

How much cement and sand do I need to lay floor tiles?

On a 1 in bed of 1:4 mortar with a cement slurry, a 1,000 sq ft floor takes about 24 bags of cement and 91 cft of sand, just under one 100 cft trolley. On tile adhesive the same floor takes 24 bags of 20 kg and no sand. Both need about 21 kg of grout.

Why does a 24 x 24 tile not cover 4 sq ft?

Because it is made 60 x 60 cm, which is 23.6 in a side, so it covers 3.875 sq ft. Every size is named in inches and made in cm the same way, about 3% smaller than its name, and on a 1,200 sq ft floor counting 4 sq ft a tile leaves you 3 boxes short.
